“Carry Each Other’s Burdens”

Story of my Grandson - Carrying out this Scripture - Putting Compassion into Action!

This scripture always reminds me of a time when I went to visit my daughter and her family. It was evening and getting dark out. The kids were getting ready for bed as I was packing up my things to leave. It was time to get my hugs and say our goodbyes.

My middle grandson Grady, who was about 5 at the time, said, “Grandma will you be okay driving home tonight? Maybe you should stay overnight and go in the morning.” I assured him I would be fine.

His next question was, “Grandma do you want something to drink for your drive?” He proceeded to the fridge to get me not one, but two bottles of water and then followed with, “Would you like a snack too?”

I grabbed my large tote with all the things I had brought along and put it over my shoulder, picked up my purse, and of course I was holding the two bottles of water and the bag of snacks that Grady had packed up for me.

As Grady was watching me, he walked around me and said, “Grandma let me help you.” As he stood tall on his toes he reached up to my shoulder and pulled off the straps of my heavy bag and moved it to his own small shoulders. I watched him walk out ahead of me with this large bag reaching to the ground, tipping his body with it’s weight as he went out the door, down the steps and followed the sidewalk to my car.

I realized I could have suggested that he take the water bottles instead of the bag but I also knew that it would not have meant as much to him. He purposefully walked around me to take the large bag. You see, he wanted to do as much as he could to help me. He wanted to carry the heaviest load. He wanted to make it easy for me.

This my friends is compassion in action - when we do what we can to help!

Galatians 6:2 says, ”Carry each other’s burdens.”

We are taught in Galatians that we are responsible for our own accountability, but occasionally we are overburdened in life and we need help from others. That’s okay!

Likewise, we have a responsibility to help others when they become burdened by sin or difficulties. We are to walk along side them, encourage them and point them to the One who can ultimately carry their burdens and give them rest.

Mathew 11:28

“Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

God wants to take your heaviest load just like Grady did for me. Let him take it!

Galatians 6:2

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fullfill the law of Christ.”

Just like Grady’s display of love and compassion for me, we are called to do the same. We were never meant to carry things alone.

It’s hard for us at times to let go of the things we carry or to ask for help. Remember how I was blessed by Grady’s help but also know that it brought him great joy to help me!

Whatever it is you might be going through, don’t go through it alone. Allow others to fulfill the law of Christ and walk along side you.
